FAQ – Indicators and Application
Do my cattle have to have an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator if they are traveling a short distance?
If the livestock are traveling across a public road, they must have an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator.
Do I have to have a tag/indicator in my animal’s ear if I’m taking it to slaughter?
Yes. If the animal is leaving the premises, it must be tagged with an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator.
What do I need to do in the CLTS database to show I have exported animals?
To export cattle, they must be tagged with an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator or USDA RFID tag/indicator and the exporter on record must submit an export event in the CLTS database within 30 days of the animal leaving Canada. What do I do if my animal loses its approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator?
The animal must be re-tagged.
If the animal was born on your premises:

- And you know the number of the lost tag/indicator; you can submit a Cross Reference event that will transfer all information from the old tag/indicator to the new tag/indicator. Click here for instructions on submitting a cross reference event.
- And you do not know the number of the lost tag/indicator; you can re-apply a new tag/indicator and apply any animal events from your animal records to the new tag/indicator number, such as a birth date.
If the animal was purchased:

- And you know the number of the lost tag/indicator, you can submit a Cross Reference event that will transfer all information from the old tag/indicator to the new tag/indicator;

- For approved CCIA tag/indicator, a Move In event must be submitted on the lost tag/indicator number before submitting the Cross Reference to the new tag/indicator. Click here for instructions on submitting a Move In event and Click Here for the Cross Reference event.
- For a USDA approved tag/indicator, an Imported event must have been submitted on the lost tag/indicator number when the animal arrived into Canada before a Cross Reference can be applied to the new tag/indicator. - And you do not know the number of the lost tag/indicator; you can submit a Replaced event. This will indicate that the animal has been re-tagged and that you are not the herd of origin for that animal. Click here for instructions on submitting a Replaced event.
My neighbour ran out of tags/indicators so I gave him some of mine, is that OK?
If you have given anyone one or more of your tags/indicators to use on their livestock, you MUST notify CCIA of the transfer, so that the inventory can be transferred from your CLTS database account to theirs.
