FAQ – Indicators and Application

If the livestock are traveling across a public road, they must have an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator.

Yes. If the animal is leaving the premises, it must be tagged with an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator.

To export cattle, they must be tagged with an approved CCIA RFID tag/indicator or USDA RFID tag/indicator and the exporter on record must submit an export event in the CLTS database within 30 days of the animal leaving Canada. Click here to access the instructions and templates for submitting an exported event in the CLTS database.

The animal must be re-tagged.

If the animal was born on your premises:

  • And you know the number of the lost tag/indicator; you can submit a Cross Reference event that will transfer all information from the old tag/indicator to the new tag/indicator. Click here for instructions on submitting a cross reference event.
  • And you do not know the number of the lost tag/indicator; you can re-apply a new tag/indicator and apply any animal events from your animal records to the new tag/indicator number, such as a birth date.

If the animal was purchased:

  • And you know the number of the lost tag/indicator, you can submit a Cross Reference event that will transfer all information from the old tag/indicator to the new tag/indicator;
    • For a CCIA approved tag/indicator, a Move In event must be submitted on the lost tag/indicator number before submitting the Cross Reference to the new tag/indicator. Click here for instructions on submitting a Move In event and Click Here for the Cross Reference event.
    • For a USDA approved tag/indicator, an Imported event must have been submitted on the lost tag/indicator number when the animal arrived into Canada before a Cross Reference can be applied to the new tag/indicator. Click here for instructions on submitting an Imported event and Click Here for the Cross Reference event.
  • And you do not know the number of the lost tag/indicator; you can submit a Replaced event. This will indicate that the animal has been re-tagged and that you are not the herd of origin for that animal. Click here for instructions on submitting a Replaced event.

If you have given anyone one or more of your tags/indicators to use on their livestock, you MUST notify CCIA of the transfer, so that the inventory can be transferred from your CLTS database account to theirs.
